My home schooled kids have some of the coolest books in their Sonlight Curriculum. Yeah, the oldest one is only in 5th grade but hey, sometimes the explanations of historical figures in a young readers book are better than the goofy jargon we as adults get fed. (check out Youth With a Mission’s series on Christian Heroes…way cool)
One of the most recent ones is a book on William Wilberforce, one of the leading men to morally oppose slavery at a time when everybody else thought it was fine and dandy; even a blessing to the slaves because slavery acutally helped them. Gheez…see the idiocy of the day?
As I read… I was reminded of a quote by Sir Francis Drake that Craig Groeschel brought up at Cataylst Conference 07. Interestingly Drake laid the foundation for some of the slave trade! He obviously struggled adhering to some of his own insights. Sure, I’d love to point fingers and say he didn’t live what he said but I’d find the reflection in the mirror pointing at my own heart…
Disturb us, O Lord, when
We are too pleased with ourselves;
When our dreams have come true,
Because we dreamed too little.
We arrived safely,
Because we sailed too close to shore.
Disturb us, O Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess,
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity.
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, O Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wilder seas
Where storms will show Your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push us into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
We ask in the name of our Captain,
Who is Jesus.
Wilberforce and others in our history were disturbed by what they saw and did something about it. You? get absorbed…n
